277 hp and 460 lbs-ft (@ 1500 rpm) are the rumored “official” numbers (I can’t find it anywhere but !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .)
Behold the engine for those pining for the great mileage you used to get from the original duramax.
It’s going to need to be pretty danged impressive MPG wise compared to the real world mileage you get from the 5.3 tho compared to how much extra it’
going to cost;
3-4 grand.
Still, what I would do to get one of these with the 10 speed in my cruiser. holy crap.

I had no idea GM was doing another diesel. Cool.
Though every time GM talks about a diesel it makes me wonder w hat ever happened to the 4-ish liter V8 mini-Duramax?

Will it fit in the new Supra?

Yes! Time for mopar to bring back the Slant 6 name with their own 16 block

It got dumped and turned into this.

oh yeeeeeeaaaah

That would fit nicely in a milsurp humvee

As much as I love this engine I feel like the next truck I buy will probably be electric. I’d buy the Rivian R1T if I had that kind of money.

Duramax = Expensive Injectors
No, thank you.

That’s surprisingly close to my Vortec 7.4L big block V 8.
I’ll bet it’ll fit under my Suburban’s hood. I wonder how long it’ll be before someone does a transplant.

yup, 290/410 if I remember correctly.

Any chance or guess if this will be available as a crate?
![]() 03/25/2019 at 18:13 |

Everything is available for the right price. it might be cheaper to import and HDJ81, do a swap, then jack up the power though...this engine can’t be cheap and it has to work with the can’t be cheap 10 speed too.

That’s more than the 20 yr old 12v Cummins or 7.3 Ferds that are generally regarded as the best engines evarrrrrrrrrrrr.
It will be interesting to see how it drives as well as fuel economy #s. On paper it looks better than the other 3 comparable options though.

Its certainly more high strung. I think we need to finally let go of the idea that diesels are reliable economy engines. They are all turned way up to 11 to the point where they their service costs are astronomical which eats into their economy.
![]() 03/25/2019 at 18:44 |

Agreed, they need to be looked as a premium option, not an economy option. On HD trucks they are, hence the $10k+ price tags and double the torques over gas engines.
Arguing that you’ll never see a return-on-investment as a result of fuel savings against the option cost is horse poo. The argument should be whether it’s worth it for the extra benefits (more powahhh, quieter, longer range, etc).
![]() 03/25/2019 at 18:46 |

too right. Thats the only reason to consider the 2.8 duramax, because the range you get plus the effortless low and mid range power.

If this thing doesn’t net close to 30 mpg, it isn’t worth it. My father in law’s ‘17 5.3/6 speed gets 21 regularly highway and has seen 25.5 as his best. All that without the BS issues of a modern diesel.
![]() 03/25/2019 at 21:28 |

exactly. it better return well over 30 highway in the real world to make financial sense. or if you haul a
lot

I’m gunning for it tho, the world needs a good OEM small diesel. Well, the world has them so the US needs one.
